A Question from a reader

Got this from a reader this morning:

Hey Al. Nice write up as always. Good read. Hitting you up with a question if you don't mind....

We have just finished the recording process of our debut CD and we couldn't be more happier with how it's going so far. Next step is the mixing and mastering and we're ready for the release and distribution. We purchased your DVD and learned some very valuable tips from you which we appreciate full-heartedly. One thing we were hoping you could help us with is the manufacturing and packaging of the CD. We want around 100 full length copies complete with CD sleeve and possibly some demo's if we don't decide to burn and create them ourselves. Would you happen to know of a nice reliable, fairly priced company that could help us out with this? We trust your opinion and advice. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time Al

-Rick

Hey Rick thanks for the kind words and the great question

Congrats on getting your debut cd ready - that's awesome - a huge accomplishment and something that 95% of all bands that ever start never even get to do! So well done bro

Ok so you are looking for a good manufacturer? Gone are the days where it makes sense to get 1000 cds for $999 IMHO - I would def. start with a low physical pressing and if things go well you can always re-press. I would also look at having a digital copy available via I-tunes (I recommend using Tunecore to get your music on I-tunes)

For cd pressings lower than 500 copies - I would suggest using National Media Services: http://www.nationalmediaservices.com/

If you are confident you can do 500+ to start with - which is actually pretty tough in this day and age I would suggest A 2 Z media: http://www.atozmedia.com/web/

I have used both these companies and can vouch that they will look after you. A 2 z is cheaper per disc but you have to press more - I would def hit both of them up let them know what you want to do and then look at your price quotes before you make a final decision

Let us know how you go in a future email!

Auditioning new band members

In general most bands come about by a bunch of high school friends getting together and playing , in an organic way if you will, very naturally

However there are some bands who did not know each other, placed ads , connected and who went on to greatness, Kiss and Guns and Roses are 2 that spring to mind.

After you have checked with every friend and every friend of a friend that you know to find that replacement drummer or bassist you pretty much have to resort to the classified ads.

These days Craigslist is pretty much the go to website to run your ads - just make sure you click on the nearest major city or Town that's relevant for you.

Local Lifestyle papers like the Village Voice (for NYC) and the LA weekly (well for LA) have lost a lot cash revenue from their musicians wanted ads and now have free online ad services that are worth checking out too.

When writing your ad make sure you don't just put "drummer wanted" yada yada, use a couple of descriptive words to stand out from all the boring ads - even something like "Lunatic Drummer wanted" would get you better results that just "drummer wanted"

Most people applying to your ad these days want to see a website or check out a previously recorded track before they waste your time (or theirs) which makes alot of sense but it can be tricky if you have significantly changed your sound since the last recording or have never recorded anything before, in that case its best to explain the person asking what you plan to sound like and give them some back ground information about your band or project so they can see where your head is at.

If you do get a bunch of people asking to come down and you do have a rented rehearsal room (ass opposed to your own space) I suggest you book in try outs like this:

Your session is 8pm-10pm. Book your first guy for 8pm, Book your 2nd guy for 9pm , if you get anyone else coming down you book them for 830pm and the next for 930pm, etc etc

If possible get cell phone numbers from people and text them the day before hand. Musicians are a weird breed and I know of countless friends who have even had people call them saying "right I am leaving the house now see you in 1 hour" and just never turn up. Who knows what goes though someones head as they walk into a room full of strangers to audition , you know??

If you do get some one who can barely play - don't have them play for the full 15 or 30 minutes (or whatever time you have until the next guy is meant to come in) play a song or two and then politely tell them you have more guys to see and you will be in touch - if its not going to work out why waste your time or theirs?

If you have someone you are on the fence about - mentally file them in the "call back" file and if no one else is suitable that day give this person a 2nd change and get them back for your next round of auditions, perhaps give them a song or two to learn first - I have seen a lot of kick ass guys go in and fudge stuff on the day (nerves perhaps?) to go on and be a great asset to a band down the track

If you are a musician and you yourself are going for auditions - consider taking singing lessons - if it comes down to you and one other bassist and you can offer backing vocals and he can't who do you think a band is going to want? You of course!

Product Review: Speed Lives by Michael Angelo Batio

Speed lives is the follow-up to speed kills 1, By the world famous Michael Angel Batio voted No. 1 Shredder of All Time" by Guitar One Magazine in 2003

Yea, Speed Kills is a classic instructional video -- speed lives is breaking down "No Boundaries" (one song) into about 27 parts and showing you how to play it, enabling someone to learn all of Michael's techniques in the process of learning this monster guitar solo

Speed Kills and Speed Lives are basically the same, Speed lives is just an updated version, I'm not sure though, i might be wrong. There are a couple mistakes in this video and the levels are messed up but the recent recording of speed lives is virtually flawless If you want to work on a "showpiece", then speed lives is the one for you . With the skills you learn on this dvd you can walk into any band audition and when they ask you to play something you can pull this out of your arsenal of guitar tricks, blow everyone's minds and get the gig

For new guys everywhere , speed lives is the M.A.B. DVD to buy

Lamb of God In the Billboard charts

So this week in the US Lamb of God's new album "Wrath" charted at #2 in the Billboard Charts.

Great for them and great for exposing heavy music to more of the mainstream crowd.

To get to #2 in the Bilboard charts in Feb. of 2009 the band sold 68,000 copies in one week.

I have to say any hard rock or metal band in the 1970's who went to #2 in the charts would have have probably sold about 2,000,000 copies or so

So cd and lps sales are a fraction of of what they were 30 years ago.

So what does that mean to you? Does it mean shouldn't bother trying to do anything more with your band then a simple hobby for ya?

Nah I don't think so .....Every day now there are new bands getting signed to record labels, writing and recording albums and getting to tour the world - if its in your blood then you have to DO IT.

If these guys can do it so can YOU

In fact Lamb of God started off as a bunch of buddies at College jamming in their dorm room.

When they first started they had no idea that they would be headlining stadiums and have Top 10 hit albums. In fact one of their first Independent label bosses - told them they would be huge they didn't believe him! They couldn't even see how they would make one dime playing music.

So whats the bottom line here?

The bottom line is if ya want to play and make music just get on with it and make a start.

The rest will fall into place in due course!

Why Bands still need :Labels

These days we hear a lot about guys like Trent Reznor from Nine inch Nails and Radiohead , what visionaries they are and how in this day and age bands don't need labels anymore

Yesterday, I read that in 2008 in the USA alone there were over 100,000 self released albums, of these 100,000 albums less than 3% of them sold over 1000 copies!

To me that is pretty apparent that while if you have 20 years music business experience like Trent Reznor or the dudes from Radiohead then going it alone makes a lot of sense - even though I think from memory after Radiohead did their "pay what you want album" they still also did a deal with a record label to have them release it.

When you sign to a label you get all the benefits of that label, that means people who will champion your band to TV , to the web, to all the magazines, staff who will go to the few remaining record stores and tell the buyer there why your cd is the one they need to stock, people who can help you with your album art, your music video, touring plans etc

Seems pretty obvious to me that there is still a need for labels

So re-assess your bands game plan - set real goals for what you need to accomplish as a band for the next 6 months and even the next year, whether that is to record your first album , to book a weekend tour or even play your first gig

I talk further on my 2 dvd course Metal Label Secrets on what exactly labels are looking for as far as your band is concerned - you can check it out here if you have not yet done so Metal Label Secrets

Question From a Reader

Question from a reader: Do you have any advice for a band from the East Coast of Canada starting it's own label and releasing, distributing, marketing itself.?

Great question - if you look at any of the bands that get signed to one of the big metal record labels AT LEAST 80% have had a release on a smaller Indie or their own label before they come to the attention of the bigger labels.

In this digital age the cost of recording an album, designing artwork, getting the physical cd manufactured and getting digital distribution has never been more affordable.

But without the right plan behind your self financed album things are going to get messy

I recommend that you check this link: Record Label Business Plan

and see if you are ready to run your own label

Here is what they are saying about Metal Label Secrets

I got this great letter the other day from one of my customers, Shawn:

Hey Al,

I have watched your DVD and love the information and what you are doing. When I was 20 I moved to the US and then London, England to persue my dream of being able to tour the world as a metal artist. It completly drained my life force trying to get noticed by a metal label because I was taking all the wrong steps you spoke of on your dvd. I came back home to Canada and basically gave up my dream. But after about 7 years, I stumbled upon a group of musicians that are driven like nothing I have ever seen before and i'm fully committed in doing this right the second time around.

The band is called Galla Me, and the full line up was just formed a few months ago. We could use any help along the way, we want to thank you for your wonderful DVD and we will have questions for you for sure :)

Shawn

One of the reasons I put this course together is for guys like Shawn - some bands stumble upon how to put everything together naturally (talk about getting lucky!) but the sad reality is most bands never even get a sniff at a record deal.

In fact I read something today that said 90% of all bands that get a record deal fail as well!.

Pretty scary statistics...if you don't know what you are doing.

Check out my course www.metallabelsecrets.com where I explain to you a lot of the massive pitfalls that most metal bands face in the music business

The Music Business is Dead

The music business is dead...

I hear this a lot these days, so the question might be - the music business is dead - so why bother even trying???

Well I can tell you right now the music business is NOT DEAD and in fact now more than ever people are listening to music - especially in these crappy economic times people need their music esp good loud pissed off metal music!

Everyone and their dog knows that cd sales are down way down from what they used to be, before the advent of Napster and file sharing software.

That is a fact!!

But the bottom line is there are still bands out there selling 100's of thousands of cds right now, still making a living from touring the world, selling t-shirts, getting songs on film soundtracks, getting songs on video games etc

See the thing is changes happen new technologies come to play and some people get left behind and some people adapt with the times

Look at the film industry - When movies first came out they said it was a novelty that would not last, when TV first came out in the 1950s they said "are you nuts people get to watch movies on TV , for free? The movie industry would not last!!"

When VCRS first came out in the 1970s people said "wow VCRS are great- for $5 you can rent the latest movie, don't have to stand in line, pay for popcorn you can pause the film at anytime, no one talking behind you etc "

Of course every main street had about 10 video rental libraries and some of the larger movie theaters closed but then people got bored staying indoors all the time and the movie theaters invented the multiplex, these days even blockbuster is struggling to stay in business and every little mom and pop video club is out of business - I think last year the movie business had one of their biggest grossing years ever!

So my point is don't count the music business out just yet - don't be fooled into just settling on being a hobby band - there are PLENTY of bands out there making great money playing music professionally - why not your band?

Check out my 2 dvd course www.metallabelsecrets.com on getting a record deal.

As always any questions, just ask!

Perfect Pitch

Last Thursday evening my buddy Rick asked me to come down to his rehearsal space as he wanted help in auditioning a new bass player for his band.

Of course the first couple of guys came down - could barely play and were just wasting everyones time (including their own)

He had one guy come in, great look, good equipment, Rick would play him the guitar riff, tell him what the chords were and within a minute or two he would have created an great bass line to suit the song. This guy was my first choice as Rick's new bassist.

The last guy strutted in full of confidence, set up, asked Rick to play him one of the songs, shouted out..."G, E minor, F, D, C, G - right?" Within seconds he joined in and was blazing away on the song!

This guy had perfect pitch!

I don't know about you but any skill I ever had as a musician I had to WORK TO GET, some people are born with a natural built in musical talent and can just pick out and hear notes and chords immediately, Jimi Hendrix and Yngwie Malmsteen both had this ability.

Having perfect pitch is one of the MOST important qualities a musician can have.

My buddy Ryan Cameron has put together a great course on Perfect Pitch, he has taught 100's of people how to bring out this natural skill in you within 6 weeks.

Check out his site here: Pure Pitch

Try his course and you will soon find yourself being able to tell what any chord you hear is without needing a reference note!

Venom

Everyone knows the band Venom right?

They actually coined the Term "Black Metal" way back in 1982 with their 2nd release.

One of the great things about Venom was that before they got signed, they never supported anyone! Never! They could proudly say that they headlined every gig they evcr did

In my opinion a genius move on their behalf - not only do you have the bragging rights to any record label, magazine or blog that you talk to that YOU HAVE ALWAYS HEADLINED - you can actually win over the support bands crowd creating new fans for yourself and if you are clever you can even make money out of it!

My friend Kevin Morrison has put together a great course to help you put on your own successful concert.

Concert Promotions

He covers everything from insurance to sponsorship proposals, to contracts, to riders - this book is essential if you don't want to lose your shirt setting up a successful concert.

There is alot of fast money to be made being a concert promoter but you can also mess up big time if you don't know what you are doing

The age old dilemma for most musicians

Unless you have rich parents the age old dilemma for most musicians is how to pay rent eat buy new musical equipment etc, before your music pays for itself

These days alot of jobs won't let you have long hair , won't let you have time off for that "make or break" tour, don't pay you enough to buy that new marshall stack etc,

So what's a musician to do?

Well one of the best ways a musician can make money before their band takes off is to teach - the money is good, the hours are flexible and you can have your hair as long as you want

These lessons will show you all the tricks and tips on how to make money teaching guitar or bass

Teach Guitar

Check them out right now as any time spent on your day job thats not spent on playing and making music is time wasted
